Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school basketball. The tradition continues to close out the 2024-25 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Brayden Burries of
Roosevelt (Eastvale) is the 2024-25 California MaxPreps Player of the Year. The 6-foot-5 senior guard led the Mustangs to a 35-2 record and their first Open Division state championship.
For the season, Burries averaged 29.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.9 steals per contest. He 55.6 percent from the field, 34.7 percent from 3-point range and 83.6 percent from the free throw line.

In an 80-60 victory over Archbishop Riordan (San Francisco) in the state championship game, Burries went off for 44 points to set an Open Division title game record. He averaged 36.7 points per outing while shooting 61 percent from the field across three state playoff games.
Burries took Roosevelt – which opened in 2006 – to new heights, leading the program to a 66-6 record over the past two seasons and making the Mustangs a mainstay in the national rankings.
Regarded as the No. 11 prospect in the Class of 2025 according to
247Sports, the uncommitted senior holds offers offers from Alabama, Arizona, Duke, Houston, Kansas, Kentucky, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, UCLA and USC among others.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which is scheduled to be released April 8. Past selections include 2023-24 All-NBA picks Devin Booker (2014), Jalen Brunson (2014, 2015), Anthony Davis (2011), Kevin Durant (2006), Anthony Edwards (2019) and Jayson Tatum (2014, 2015, 2016).
