South Delta had lost eight straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Saturday they dropped down to 0-4 to make it nine. They came up short against the Humphreys County Cowboys, falling 14-7. On the bright side, the seven- run performance marked the Bulldogs' highest-scoring matchup to date.
South Delta saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Tkaveon Davis, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Willie Sherman was another, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
As for Humphreys County, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-4. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five games by seven runs or more this season.
On Humphreys County's side, Alkingston Scrivens made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out eight batters over 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Scrivens was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Tamarion Chapman, who got on base in both of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. Another player making a difference was Mykle Nunn, who got on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
South Delta and Humphreys County will both get a bit of extra prep time before their next contests. The next time the Bulldogs see the field they'll take on Leflore County at 4:00 p.m. on the 17th. As for Humphreys County, their break will end when they face Edwards at 5:30 p.m. on the 17th.
