If the South Mecklenburg Sabres were riding high off their 73-49 takedown of the Olympic Trojans last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. South Mecklenburg fell just short of the Cardinal by a score of 68-65. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as South Mecklenburg came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 35th, while the Cardinal are ranked 333rd).
Despite the loss, South Mecklenburg still got an impressive performance from Anderson Skelton, who scored 17 points along with seven rebounds and two steals. Peter Moye was another key contributor, scoring 14 points.
Daniel Waritay had an outrageously good game for Berry as he scored 22 points along with seven rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Zymiere Chester, who scored 16 points along with eight rebounds.
South Mecklenburg's loss dropped their record down to 16-3. As for Berry, their victory bumped their record up to 6-13.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. South Mecklenburg won't have much time to rest: their next match is against the Cougars at 7:30 p.m. on January 31st. Charlotte Catholic is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 59.3 points per game this season. As for Berry, they will be playing in front of their home fans against the Knights at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Ardrey Kell knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past four contests -- so hopefully the Cardinal like a good challenge.
