Basketball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Wade Marsh and Luis Echevarria Lead Cardinal Newman to Victory

Cardinal Newman lost to First Baptist School back in January of 2024, but they didn't allow them the same satisfaction on Monday. The Cardinal Newman Cardinals snuck past the First Baptist School Hurricanes with a 54-49 win. Given the Cardinals' advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 48th, while the Hurricanes are ranked 209th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Cardinal Newman was led to victory by Luis Echevarria and Wade Marsh. Echevarria went 6 of 12 en route to 19 points along with eight assists and six rebounds, while Marsh went 7 for 13 from beyond the arc on his way to 22 points and six boards. Those 22 points gave Marsh a new career-high. Preston Furman also deserves some recognition as he posted his first assist of the season.

Cardinal Newman smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in four consecutive contests.

Cardinal Newman is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 8-6 record this season. As for First Baptist School, they are on a nine-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-9.

Cardinal Newman has already played their next game, a 66-22 loss against Heathwood Hall Episcopal on the 14th. As for First Baptist School, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 69-43 defeat against Pinewood Prep on the 15th.
