Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) freshman Stacy Yam never thought she'd be in this position: One match, then one set to decide the CIF North Region team championship.
With both teams done and watching the match at Fremont Central Park, the 13-year-old freshman prevailed 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 4 singles as Mitty upset four-time NorCal/USTA champion Monta Vista (Cupertino) 4-3 at Fremont Central Park.
According to longtime Bay Area prep journalist Phil Wong, Yam trailed 3-1 in the final set before rattling off five straight games to claim the set, match and NorCal team title, the Monarchs' first.
Yam, 13, said she had no idea that the match and title came down to the No. 4 singles match.
"I didn't know it was three-all," Yam told Wong. "(My teammates) wouldn't tell me. I'm just glad to help my team come through."
Tayler Davis (No. 1) and Kersten Meehan (No. 3) also won singles matches for Mitty (24-3), which also received a victory at No. 3 doubles by Tara Vanooteghem and Maggie Yudkevich.
The doubles teams of Annalia Choy-Chau Nguyen (No. 1) and Vynnie Kong-Sylvia (No. 2) were victorious for Monta Vista along with No. 2 singles Courtney Chinn.
The best individual match of the day might have come at No. 1 singles, where three-time West Catholic Athletic League champ Davis hung on to defeat junior Sophie Chang, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
