The Godinez Fundamental Grizzlies came tearing into Tuesday's match with six straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 15 points) and they left with even more momentum. They escaped with a win against Ocean View by the margin of a single free throw, 36-35. Given Godinez Fundamental's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 397th, while the Seahawks are ranked 985th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Godinez Fundamental found their leader in underclassman Julissa Mota, who scored ten points along with four steals. Mota is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed three or more in the last five games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Valerie Esteban, who scored eight points along with six rebounds.
Angelina Bado and Guadalupe Fuentes certainly did their best on Tuesday to avoid the loss. Bado dropped a double-double on 24 points and ten rebounds, while Fuentes scored five points. That was a full 68.6% of Ocean View's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Godinez Fundamental has been performing well recently as they've won 11 of their last 13 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 13-8 record this season. As for Ocean View, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-18.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Godinez Fundamental will square off against the Lions at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Ocean View, they will head out on the road to square off against the Jaguars at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Segerstrom focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 12 on Tuesday.
