Basketball Recap: Make It Five in a Row for Polytechnic

Polytechnic extended their winning streak to five on Friday, bumping them up to 10-2. They took down the Rio Hondo Prep Kares 59-44. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Panthers also won the last time the pair played back in December of 2024.

Polytechnic got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Lori Ohanian out in front who went 7-for-12 to rack up 15 points along with six steals and five assists. Ohanian has been hot recently, having posted three or more steals the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Harper Doyle, who shot 46% from the field on her way to 12 points in addition to seven boards and three steals.

Polytechnic smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 14 consecutive games dating back to last season.

As for Rio Hondo Prep, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-3 record this season. While losing is never fun, they can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 400th, while Polytechnic is ranked 160th).

Despite the loss, Rio Hondo Prep saw an underclassman step up: sophomore LEAH RODRIGUEZ went 6-for-9 en route to 15 points and seven rebounds. Thanks to that strong game, RODRIGUEZ now owns an excellent 45.7% field goal percentage. TARA RILEY was another key player, putting up seven points and six boards.

Polytechnic wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 73-20 victory against San Gabriel Academy on the 22nd. As for Rio Hondo Prep, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 65-36 defeat against San Luis Obispo on the 26th.
