The loss was a bit of a surprise, as East Bakersfield came into the match with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 241st, while Santa Maria is ranked 572nd).
Santa Maria's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Nevaeh Madrigal , who scored 17 points along with 5 assists and 5 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Alyssa Reyes, who scored 10 points along with 8 assists and 4 steals.
East Bakersfield's loss dropped their record down to 3-1. As for Santa Maria, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 3-3.
Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Notre Dame the next time they take the court. Santa Maria will host Notre Dame at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, while East Bakersfield will host them at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
