On April 30, the third-annual MaxPreps Girls Soccer Tour of Champions presented by the National Guard brought us to the home of the
Westview (San Diego) Wolverines. The Wolverines took the Southern California regional championship and placed themselves in a position to be nationally recognized. Finishing ranked No. 45 in the nation by MaxPreps, coach Peter Stogsdill and the Wolverines were proud to welcome the 2014 Tour of Champions.
On a Wednesday morning, at approximately 10:30 a.m., MaxPreps and the California Army National Guard arrived at the gates of the beautiful campus of Westview High School. Administrators and staff were already prepared for the day's festivities and welcomed us warmly. The administration was very accommodating. Athletic Director Chris Carter acclimated us to the 12-year-old school and we were off and running. By 11 a.m., the MaxPreps and Army National Guard banners were in place and set to go despite heavy winds and hot temperatures. Media from Fox 5 and KUSI-TV were in attendance to cover the event along with the school videographers.
By noon, players, parents and administration gathered around the outdoor quad for the ceremony. Principal Cassen opened up the festivities with a hearty welcome and lively greeting. It was then turned over to MaxPreps representative, Josh Canales, to facilitate the remainder of the ceremony. Canales recognized the team for its achievements and explained what MaxPreps is all about. Canales then introduced Staff Sergeant Bell of the California Army National Guard. SSG Bell explained the significance of the Minuteman trophy and its roots in American History. SSG Bell then presented the Minuteman (Army National Guard national ranking trophy) to coach Stogsdill and the Westview Wolverine soccer team. Coach Stogsdill introduced the team individually and had the girls join him in front of the MaxPreps media backdrop. Following the presentation, several of the television stations sought interviews with players, coaches and MaxPreps. The school was very proud of this accomplishment.
Congratulations to Westview High School for its No. 45 national ranking, outstanding character, exemplary leadership and regional title!
