South El Monte got a great performance from Ryan Leon as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out nine over five innings pitched. Those nine strikeouts gave Leon a new career-high.
On the hitting side, Armando Huizar was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. Julian Renteria also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.
South El Monte hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least four batters in six consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Marshall came tearing into Wednesday's contest with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.7 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Everything went their way against the Panthers as they made off with a 9-2 victory. The Eagles might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matches by six runs or more this season.
George Jennings and Nate Callaway made a splash no matter where they played. Throwing, Jennings tossed four innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Meanwhile, Callaway struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). He has been consistent : he hasn't given up a single earned run in five consecutive appearances. At the plate, Jennings went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Callaway scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Caleb Thatcher, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Trevor Lain, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2.
South El Monte's win was their eighth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-5. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.4 runs on average over those games. As for Marshall, their record is now 9-2-1.
South El Monte was able to grind out a solid win over Marshall in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, winning 10-6. Will South El Monte repeat their success, or does Marshall has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
