Independence is 8-2 against South since April of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The 76ers will head out to challenge the Bulldogs at 5:30 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
Last Monday, Independence got the win against West by a conclusive 16-2. The 76ers have beaten the Cowboys the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Cowboys has come to flipping the script.
Independence let Derek Pigott and Richard Kearney run wild. Pigott scored four runs and stole six bases while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances, while Kearney scored three runs and stole six bases while going 2-for-3. What's more, Kearney posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. Aaiden Bush was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing four bases while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for South, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Tuesday. Everything went their way against Marion-Franklin on Wednesday as they made off with a 17-7 win. Considering the Bulldogs' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.
Rashawn Buggs, Jr. was incredible, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Justin Loucks, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
South's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-2. As for Independence, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-2.
Wednesday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Independence has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .433. However, it's not like South struggles in that department as they've averaged .469. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Independence skirted past South 9-7 in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the 76ers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
