Soquel is 2-8 against Aptos since May of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. Soquel will welcome Aptos at 4:00 p.m. Soquel is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.5 runs per game this season.
The home team had come away the winner the last three times Soquel and Santa Cruz had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. Soquel fell just short of Santa Cruz by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday. The matchup marked the Knights' lowest-scoring game so far this season.
Soquel got a good showing from Luke Shoemaker, who didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out seven over four innings pitched. Shoemaker has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Gabe Virgallito made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Aptos). They blew past San Lorenzo Valley 12-1 on Tuesday. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Mariners as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.
Isaiah Work made a splash while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 11 over six innings pitched. Those 11 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while getting on base in two of his five plate appearances.
In other batting news, Aptos let Cole McGillicuddy and Samuel Garcia run wild. McGillicuddy scored two runs while going 2-for-5, while Garcia scored a run and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Those two stolen bases gave Garcia a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Nate Garcia, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.
Aptos' win bumped their record up to 2-5. As for Soquel, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 10-1.
Aptos' pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Soquel has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .467. It's a different story for Aptos, though, as they've only averaged .361. Will they be able to contain Soquel's hitters?
Soquel skirted past Aptos 3-2 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Will Soquel repeat their success, or does Aptos has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
