The Goshen Central Gladiators will head out to face off against the New Paltz Huguenots at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Goshen Central is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.5 runs per game this season.
On Monday, Goshen Central didn't have quite enough to beat Warwick and fell 4-3.
F Mitterbauer spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on 11 hits and racked up eight Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Stephen Kovacs made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one run and one double.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask New Paltz). They were the clear victors by a 12-3 margin over Saugerties on Wednesday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Huguenots considering their two-run performance the matchup before.
Sean Rusnack tossed a big game, tossing five innings while giving up three earned runs off five hits. He also tossed a walk, which is notable because New Paltz is 2-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 5-7 otherwise.
On the hitting side, Jack Maiale and Nick Drewnowski did most of the damage at the plate: Maiale went 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base, while Drewnowski went 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. Those three hits gave Drewnowski a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Malcolm Dillehay, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
New Paltz was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .429. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
New Paltz has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-8 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Goshen Central, their loss dropped their record down to 7-5-1.
Goshen Central beat New Paltz 9-5 in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Gladiators since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
