Video: Shareef O'Neal Highlights
See the son of an NBA Hall of Famer in action from his junior and senior years.
Looking back one year, it wouldn't have been a stretch to make the prediction that a player from the Chino Hills boys basketball team might be the California state Player of the Year.
After all, LaMelo Ball was coming off a sophomore season in which he averaged well over 20 points a game and had lead Chino Hills to national prominence. But Ball did not stick around Chino Hills, instead spending the 2017-18 basketball season in Lithuania.
Instead, it was another Chino Hills junior who took the spotlight. Onyeka Okongwu, a 6-foot-9 center, led the Huskies to their second state championship in three years, averaging 28 points with 12 rebounds and four blocked shots per game. He headlines the MaxPreps California All-State Boys Basketball Teams for 2017-18.
The Huskies did not have the same type of season that they did in 2016, when they won national tournaments and finished No. 1 in the nation by MaxPreps. Instead, Chino Hills overcame a regular season that included 11 losses to win 10 straight playoff games and capture the Division I state title.
Okongwu, despite fouling out in the fourth quarter, had a monster game against Las Lomas (Walnut Creek) in the finals, scoring 27 points with 14 rebounds and five blocked shots. He went on to earn Player of the Year honors by the CIF Southern Section, the Los Angeles Times and the San Bernardino Sun.
Okongwu can also add MaxPreps California State Player of the Year to his list of honors heading into what promises to be a spectacular senior year.
Tim Keating of Pleasant Valley (Chico) is the MaxPreps State Coach of the Year. The Northern Section is one of the smaller sections in the state and it had won just two state championships in the history of the state playoff format — and the last one was 27 years ago.
Keating guided the Vikings to their first berth in the state finals and a 70-65 win over Notre Dame (Riverside). Along the way, Pleasant Valley set a Northern Section record for wins in a season with 32. The Vikings were also the only Northern California school to win a boys state championship.
The MaxPreps California All-State Teams include an overall first, second and third team with 15 honorable mention selections regardless of enrollment division. Divisional all-state teams (based on the team's state divisional placement for the playoffs) have also been chosen with a first and second team and MVP. Each player is listed with the local honors they have received along with their season stats (where available). MaxPreps also selected a five-player All-NorCal Division VI team.
