The San Diego Cavers will head out on the road to face off against the Bishop's Knights at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully San Diego focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Tuesday.
San Diego has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three matchups by 24 points or more this season. They claimed a resounding 47-15 victory over Holtville at home. Given San Diego's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 444th, while Holtville is ranked 1020th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Mackenzie Nitzel and Shanti Glenn were among the main playmakers for San Diego as the former scored 6 points along with 17 rebounds and 5 steals and the latter scored 9 points along with 7 steals and 6 rebounds. Nitzel is absolutely dominating the rebound category: she's posted at least eight every time she's taken the court this season. Saiyana Hughes was another key contributor, scoring 6 points along with 7 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Bishop's really took it to San Dieguito Academy for the full four quarters, racking up a 58-24 victory at home. With Bishop's ahead 37-14 at the half, the contest was all but over already.
Bishop's got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Margo Leong out in front who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 10 rebounds. Leong is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Ayla Johnson, who scored 15 points along with 3 steals.
The losses dropped San Diego to 4-3 and Holtville to 1-6.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: San Diego have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 45.1 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Bishop's struggles in that department as they've been averaging 23.3 per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out. Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
Everything went San Diego's way against Bishop's in their previous meeting back in November of 2022 as San Diego made off with a 53-29 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for San Diego since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
