Lucas Giolito, a recent graduate of
Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, Calif.), gave up his UCLA baseball scholarship on Friday when he signed a contract with the Washington Nationals worth $2,925,000, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.
The 6-foot-6, 230-pound right-handed pitcher compiled a 9-1 record with 78 strikeouts and a 1.00 ERA in 70 1/3 innings as a senior before being sidelined in March due to a sprained ligament in his right elbow.
The Nationals' top draft pick and No. 16 overall, Giolito told the Daily News, "I had some of the best doctors around treat me. I'm feeling really good. I'm confident this issue is behind me."
