Galena is 2-8 against Spanish Springs since January of 2016 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Galena Grizzlies will be staying on the road to face off against the Spanish Springs Cougars at 5:15 p.m. on December 21st. Hopefully Galena focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 23 on Saturday.
Even though Galena has not done well against McQueen recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way. Galena managed a 44-38 win over McQueen.
Among those leading the charge was Ramona Peterson, who scored 24 points along with eight steals. She continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Mia Turner was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with seven rebounds.
Spanish Springs has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three games by 34 points or more this season. They blew past Carson 66-22 on the road. The contest was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 45-7.
Spanish Springs' success was spearheaded by the efforts of Aaliyah Vance, who scored 14 points along with four steals, and Reese Wakefield, who scored 15 points. Those 15 points set a new season-high mark for her. Another player making a difference was Layni Noonkester, who scored eight points.
Galena's victory ended a nine-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-7. As for Spanish Springs, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-3.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Galena have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 25 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Spanish Springs struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 27.9 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Galena came up short against Spanish Springs in their previous meeting back in January, falling 46-40. Can Galena avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
