Despite the coronavirus limiting the number of high school football games played in Mississippi, Taylorsville (Miss.) quarterback Ty Keyes is in the process of rewriting the state record book for passing yardage and total offense. With 14,052 yards of total offense (as of Sept. 18), Keyes ranks No. 3 in the state and No. 36 on MaxPreps' national list of the Top 50 high school football career total offense leaders.
Keyes figures to climb the Top 50 list this year (he's led the state in passing each of the past three seasons), surpassing St. Stanislaus greats Dylan Favre (No. 32 at 14,262 yards) and Myles Brennan (No. 14 at 16,279). Along the way, he'll also likely pass familiar names like Ken Hall with 14,558 yards, Trevor Lawrence with 14,609 yards and Kyler Murray with 14,625 yards.
The top five is likely out of reach as they all have over 17,500 yards. Three of the top five were coached by Glendale (Springfield, Mo.) coach Mike Mauk, including No. 1 Maty Mauk at 22,681, No. 3 Ben Mauk at 19,628 and Alex Huston at 17,699. Meanwhile Austin Kafentzis, a Utah product with 19,678 yards, is the only player in history to hold the state career record in rushing and passing yardage. Other famous names include current NFL quarterbacks DeShaun Watson of Gainesville (Ga.) and Joe Burrow of Athens (The Plains, Ohio).
Keyes is the only player in the Top 50 among the class of 2021, but that might change by the end of the year. Ace Whitehead of Lampasas (Texas) has 11,659 yards of total offense as of last week, while Camren Mendoza of True Divine Word Academy (St. Louis), whose season hasn't started yet, has 13,069 yards. Meanwhile, juniors like Gunner Stockton of Rabun County (Tiger, Ga.), Garrett Rangel of Lone Star (Frisco, Texas) and Quinn Ewers of Carroll (Southlake, Texas) will also likely join next season.
The list includes yardage totals for passing, rushing and receiving.
