MaxPreps California Large School Player of the Year: Mickey Moniak, La Costa Canyon
California had some of the best players in the country in 2016, with six players chosen among the top 42 picks in the Major League Baseball Draft in June. The No. 1 player in the MLB Draft is also the No. 1 player on the MaxPreps California Large Schools All-State Team.
Moniak had a huge season at La Costa Canyon, improving his power numbers and showing the ability necessary to make him the No. 1 pick in the MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. The San Diego Section player of the year, Moniak also earned MaxPreps all-American honors after batting .476 with 7 home runs and 47 RBI.
MaxPreps Baseball Coach of the Year: Bryn Wade, Murrieta Mesa
In just his second season at Murrieta Mesa, Wade turned a perennial losing program into a Southern Section champion. After going 14-14 in his first season in 2015, Wade led the Rams to a 27-7 record in 2016 and a Southwestern League championship.
The Rams then stormed through the Southern Section Division I bracket, knocking off highly rated Orange Lutheran 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Murrieta Mesa then beat West Ranch 6-3 in nine innings in the semifinals and Harvard-Westlake 3-2 in 10 innings for the crown.
The MaxPreps California Large Schools All-State Baseball Team consists of players who play on teams that play in the following California state playoff enrollment divisions: Southern Section Divisions 1, 2; San Diego Section Open, 1; Los Angeles City Section Division 1, Central Section Division 1, Central Coast Section Open Division, North Coast Section Division 1 and Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1.
