Brandon Lucero made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out six batters over five innings while giving up three earned runs off five hits (and only one walk). He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Chula Vista is 3-0-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 3-4-1 otherwise. Lucero was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, Noah Gomez was excellent, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in RBI (two). Another player making a difference was Eric Zepeda, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Meanwhile, Olympian entered their game against Bishop's on Monday without any home losses, but there's a first time for everything. Olympian fell 5-1 to Bishop's. Having soared to a lofty 13 runs in the game before, the Eagles couldn't push the score so high this time.
Aaron Gonzalez was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Olympian saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Isaac Mendoza, who scored a run while going 1-for-3. Aramis Berrios also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
Chula Vista's record now sits at 6-4-2. As for Olympian, the defeat was their first at home , dropping their record down to 8-3-1.
Chula Vista couldn't quite finish off Olympian when the teams last played back in April of 2017 and fell 3-1. Can Chula Vista avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
