Troy hasn't had much luck against Covington recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Trojans will welcome the Buccaneers at 5:00 p.m. Troy is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.9 runs per game this season.
Troy is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to ten runs on Friday, they were much more limited against Fairmont on Tuesday. They lost 13-1 to the Firebirds. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Trojans, who until this matchup were averaging 2.96 runs allowed.
Troy saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Amayah Kennedy, who went 1-for-2 with one triple.
Meanwhile, Covington waltzed into their game on Thursday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They put the hurt on the Cavaliers with a sharp 28-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Buccaneers, who have now won 17 contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Whitney Burns and Cassidy Iddings were major factors no matter where they played. Throwing, Burns tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Iddings tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. At the plate, Burns went 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run, while Iddings went 2-for-5 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.
In other batting news, Emalyn Johnson and Taylor Foutz did most of the damage at the plate: Johnson fired off four runs, four doubles, and five RBI while going 5-for-6, while Foutz went a perfect 5-for-5 with five RBI, three runs, and one triple. Those four doubles gave Johnson a new career-high. Jayda McClure was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.
Covington was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .579. They are 18-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Troy's loss dropped their record down to 23-3. As for Covington, their win bumped their record up to 21-5.
Friday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Troy hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .436. However, it's not like Covington struggles in that department as they've averaged .462. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
