The Brookstone Cougars will take on the Calvary Christian Knights at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Brookstone is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.
Brookstone barely beat Westfield School the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Cougars were the clear victors by a 9-2 margin over the Hornets on Thursday. The Cougars haven't had any issues with the Hornets recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.
Brennan Neal made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 12 batters over 6.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in ten consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with one home run and one stolen base. That home run marked the first that he launched this season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Gray Jones, who scored a run while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Mitcham Kelly, who scored a run while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Calvary Christian got the win against Russell County on Saturday by a conclusive 13-2. That looming 13-2 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Knights yet this season.
Like Brookstone, Calvary Christian also got a great game from a two-way player: Braxton Wilkinson. Throwing, Wilkinson tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Fitz Stone tossed 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Wilkinson also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Calvary Christian is undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 8-10 otherwise. At the plate, Wilkinson scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-1, while Stone scored two runs while going 1-for-2. The dominant performance also gave Wilkinson a new career-high in RBI (two).
In other batting news, Cam Houston was incredible, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one home run, two stolen bases, and three RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in March. Bryson Brooks was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-2.
Calvary Christian always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .571. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in four consecutive contests.
Calvary Christian pushed their record up to 11-10 with the victory, which was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.1 runs over those games. As for Brookstone, their record is now 16-3.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Brookstone has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Calvary Christian struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 6.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Brookstone took their victory against Calvary Christian when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 15-6 score. Will the Cougars repeat their success, or do the Knights have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
