Gilbert is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 49 points last Friday, they were much more limited against ALA - Gilbert North on Friday. They took a blow against the Eagles, falling 49-6. The matchup marked the Tigers' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
The losing side was boosted by Jonathan Guy, who picked up 73 receiving yards, and also rushed for 47 yards.
Special teams was responsible for all of the team's points. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Guy, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Mountain Pointe had to endure a three-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They managed a 22-17 win over Campo Verde on Thursday.
Mountain Pointe's win came from a few key players Gilbert will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Kristian Escobedo, who threw for 185 yards and two TDs while completing 90.9% of his passes. Another receiver making a difference was Aiden Rodriguez, who picked up 99 receiving yards and one score.
Mountain Pointe's run defense was locked in: Campo Verde could only muster 1.7 yards per carry. The team can thank Teylor Caldwell for the heroic effort on defense: he. Mountain Pointe's run defense has been on the up-and-up: they allowed 4.45 yards per carry earlier this season, but they've only allowed 5.73 on average over their last five games.
Mountain Pointe's defense didn't let Jonah Lubno, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for five sacks. Campo Verde's QB won't forget Caldwell anytime soon given he sacked him four times. Thanks to that big game, Caldwell is now up to 8 sacks on the season.
Mountain Pointe now has a winning record of 4-3. As for Gilbert, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-3 record this season.
Gilbert couldn't quite finish off Mountain Pointe in their previous matchup back in October of 2017 and fell 33-30. Thankfully for the Tigers, Jakim Mckinney (who rushed for 216 yards and a pair of touchdowns while picking up 9.4 yards per carry) won't be suiting up this time.
