It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but the Hoggard Vikings ultimately got the result they hoped for on Friday. They slipped by West Brunswick 56-55. Given Hoggard's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 140th, while the Trojans are ranked 329th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Jayzion Davis, who scored 16 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Another player making a difference was Malakahi West, who scored five points along with six rebounds.
Despite the loss, West Brunswick saw an underclassman step up: K'Veon Griffin scored 14 points along with six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Josiah Johnson, who scored nine points along with two steals.
Hoggard's win bumped their record up to 12-8. As for West Brunswick, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-13 record this season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Hoggard will challenge the Pirates at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Topsail is coming into the matchup on a three-game losing streak. As for West Brunswick, they will head out on the road to challenge the Screaming Eagle at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Ashley focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 21 on Friday.
