The Sheldon Huskies will venture away from home to square off against the West Campus Warriors at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Sheldon is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.6 runs per game this season.
Sheldon came into this matchup off a tough 11-run loss on Wednesday. This time they kept things ultra-competitive, but unfortunately the final result was the same. They fell just short of Destiny Christian Academy by a score of 7-5 on Friday. The Huskies have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Freddy Saldana put in work while hitting and pitching. He struck out eight batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off seven hits (and only one walk). Saldana was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3. He also put up a double, which was his first of the season.
In other batting news, Justin Solari was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing Three bases. while going 2-for-4. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March of 2024. Javier Avalos was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask West Campus). Everything went their way against Natomas on Tuesday as West Campus made off with a 28-0 victory. The result was nothing new for the Warriors, who have now won five contests by ten runs or more so far this season.
Like Sheldon, West Campus also got a great game from a two-way player: Jaymin Wise. On the mound, Wise pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Jackson Start struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). West Campus is undefeated when Wise allowsthree or fewer hits, but 3-5 otherwise. At the plate, Wise got on base in all three of his plate appearances with four RBI, two runs, and one double, while Start scored three runs while going 1-for-2.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Riley Gilson, who scored two runs and stole Three bases. while getting on base in four of his six plate appearances. He has become a key player for West Campus: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 3-5 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Jonah Lee, who scored three runs while getting on base in four of his six plate appearances.
West Campus always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .691. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in four consecutive matchups.
West Campus has been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight games. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.0 runs over those games. Sheldon now has a losing record of 2-3.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Sheldon has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 10.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like West Campus struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Sheldon took their win against West Campus in their previous meeting back in February by a conclusive 12-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for Sheldon since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
