Basketball Recap: Lovington Piles Up the Points Against Portales

You can't lose the game if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Lovington's strategy against Portales on Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Lovington Wildcats blew the Portales Rams out of the water with a 79-46 final score. The Wildcats have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won ten matches by 22 points or more this season.

Kayle Covington was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 20 points and 14 boards. His evening made it six games in a row in which he has scored at least 18 points. Elijah Rivero was another key player, putting up 11 points.

Lovington smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in six consecutive games.

Lovington's win was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 14-9. As for Portales, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 11-11.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Lovington will head out to face off against Artesia at 7:00 p.m. on February 14th. Artesia will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something Lovington surely won't give up without a fight. As for Portales, they will venture away from home to square off against Goddard at 7:00 p.m. on February 14th.
