Chariho and West Warwick are an even 3-3 against one another since May of 2015, but likely not for long. The Chargers will take on the Wizards at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Chariho is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Rhode Island's top teams: Central, who was ranked 16th at the time (Chariho was ranked 21st). The Chargers sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-4 victory over the Knights on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Chargers have posted since April 17th.
The team relied heavily on Christian Mancini, who went 1-for-3 with one home run. That home run marked the first that he has launched this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Gavin Apice, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, West Warwick hadn't done well against Ponaganset recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Wizards walked away with a 5-1 victory over the Chieftains.
Anthony Burt spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on one hit and racked up 12 Ks.
At the plate, West Warwick let Jair Blanco and Nick Andruchow run wild. Blanco went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double, while Andruchow went 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Luke Gallo was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Chariho moved to 8-8 with that win, which also ended their three-game losing streak. As for West Warwick, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-4 record this season.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Chariho has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like West Warwick struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Chariho took their victory against West Warwick in their previous meeting back in May of 2022 by a conclusive 19-3 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Chargers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
