Basketball Recap: New Covenant Takes a Loss

New Covenant's game on Friday was all tied up 14-14 at the half, but sadly for them it didn't stay that way. They fell just short of the Grace Christian Warriors by a score of 39-37. The Gryphons were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Warriors earlier this season, when they won 38-18.

When it comes to explaining why New Covenant lost, don't look at Melia Leitner. Despite the final result, she almost dropped a double-double on ten points and nine boards. The dominant performance gave Leitner a new career-high in points. Another player making a difference was Alicia Kenny, who posted six points and nine rebounds.

Even though they lost, New Covenant smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Grace Christian only pulled down four offensive rebounds.

It was another big night for Aubrey Greenmun, who went 9 of 12 on her way to 20 points and six rebounds for Grace Christian. That makes it four consecutive games in which Greenmun has scored at least a third of Grace Christian's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaitlyn Harper, who put up nine points in addition to seven assists and five boards.

New Covenant's defeat dropped their record down to 6-4. As for Grace Christian, their win bumped their record up to 6-2.

New Covenant will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on North Cross at 6:00 p.m. on January 7, 2025. New Covenant is facing North Cross at the right time seeing as North Cross is stuck on a six-game losing streak. Grace Christian will also get a bit of a break before their next contest: they'll face off against Roanoke Catholic at 7:30 p.m. on January 9, 2025.
