West extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to five on Wednesday, dropping them down to 0-4. They came up short against the Weston Ranch Cougars, falling 18-6. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Cougars this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 10-5 on Monday.
Jackson Chiles was cooking despite his team's loss, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. That double was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Austin Hatcher, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI and one double.
As for Weston Ranch, their victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-3. The result was nothing new for the Cougars, who have now won three matchups by nine runs or more so far this season.
On Weston Ranch's side, Nicolas (Nico) Orona made a big impact no matter where he played. He pitched four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. Orona has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. He was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with six RBI, two doubles, and one triple. Weston Ranch is undefeated when Orona posts three or more RBI, but 1-3 otherwise.
In other batting news, Anthony (AJ) Arias was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four stolen bases, seven RBI, and four runs. He is becoming a predictor of Weston Ranch's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 0-3 when he doesn't). Stanley Melgar was another key player, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.
Looking ahead, West will take on Franklin at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Weston Ranch, they will square off against Ripon Christian at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
