Craig fired the game-winning TD pass Saturday against Booker T. Washington. There's no such thing as an easy game in South Florida as the nation's No. 7 team
Booker T. Washington (Miami, Fla.) found out the hard way on Saturday night.
The Tornadoes hosted Miami rival
Jackson, ranked outside the Top 1,000 nationally by the MaxPreps Computer and 0-1 entering the game.
So what happened?
A 31-yard touchdown pass from
Terrence Craig Jr. to Gabriel Dunn with 2:10 remaining lifted Jackson to a stunning 12-9 victory.
The victory was significant for many reasons, including who coaches the Generals. Lakatriona Brunson, 39, is the first female head varsity football coach in Florida history. She was hired in February.
Booker T. Washington, which entered 2-0 with impressive wins over previous No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) and Monsignor Pace, struggled throughout offensively.
But a 20-yard TD pass from
Daniel Richardson to
Tyquan Thornton seemed to bail out the Tornadoes, giving them a 9-6 lead with 7:16 remaining.
But Craig and Dunn pulled it out for the Generals, who fell to Columbus 21-13 in Brunson's debut.
Jackson made national news in February with the hiring of Brunson, who was the star of truTV series
South Beach Tow.
Brunson isn't the only famous coach on the Jackson sideline. Former 2 Live Crew rapper
Luther Campbell is the assistant head coach. He has coached
defense at a handful of schools in the Miami area.
"Today is historic for not only Florida, but Miami
Jackson," Brunson told reporters the day she was hired. "I took a look like, ‘Why can’t I do it?’ We’re just here to
change the atmosphere here at Miami Jackson and get some W’s on the
board. I know I can do it... Watch what we’re going to do. It’s some big
things coming up."
On Saturday, she proved prophetic.
