Cornerstone Christian has gone a perfect 9-0 against Calvary Baptist recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Crusaders will head out to square off against the Cougars at 6:30 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Cornerstone Christian's pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Tuesday. Everything went their way against Packinghouse Christian Academy as they made off with a 22-0 win. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Crusaders.
Jayden Soto was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.
In other pitching news, Dylan Kelly looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). He continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Lucas Gomez-Creguer, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, four runs, and two RBI. That home run marked the first that he launched this season. Another player making a difference was Ben Frazier, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Calvary Baptist's rock-solid pitchers showed up for the team's sixth consecutive shutout on Tuesday. They put the hurt on Norton Science & Language Academy with a sharp 18-0 victory.
Zaedik Mcphail and Justin Delgadillo did most of the damage at the plate: Mcphail scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-2, while Delgadillo scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-3. Calvary Baptist is undefeated when Mcphail posts two or more stolen bases, but 2-5 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Elijah Gomez, who scored a run while going 1-for-1.
Calvary Baptist kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are a perfect 8-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Cornerstone Christian's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 14-5. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Calvary Baptist, their record now sits at 12-5.
Everything went Cornerstone Christian's way against Calvary Baptist when the teams last played back in March, as Cornerstone Christian made off with a 12-3 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Crusaders since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
