Kendall Johnson tossed a big game, striking out seven batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Emerson Husen was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with one home run, two RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted over her last 11 games. Aubrey Horst was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one double.
Gretna East was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .423. They are a perfect 9-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, Northwest faced Hastings in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Saturday. The Vikings were the clear victors by a 9-2 margin over the Tigers.
The team relied heavily on Abby Dinkelman, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Alexis Glaze, who went 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Gretna East's record is now 17-11. As for Northwest, their record now sits at 19-2.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Gretna East has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Northwest struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Gretna East might still be hurting after the 8-0 loss they got from Northwest in their previous meeting back in October of 2024. Can the Griffins avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
