The Vela Sabercats came tearing into Friday's contest with nine straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 24.1 points) and they left with even more momentum. They took down McAllen Memorial 48-33. Given Vela's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 264th, while McAllen Memorial is ranked 596th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Janai Coleman, who dropped a double-double on 28 points and 10 rebounds. The matchup was her ninth in a row with at least ten points. Laura Guizar was another key contributor, scoring 8 points.
Vela has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 11 of their last 12 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 16-3 record this season. As for McAllen Memorial, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost three of their last four matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 11-7 record this season.
Vela will head out on the road to face off against Sharyland at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Sharyland focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 15 on Tuesday. As for McAllen Memorial, they will be playing at home against McAllen at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. McAllen is hoping to put an end to a three-game streak of away losses.
