San Mateo is 2-8 against Hillsdale since March of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The San Mateo Bearcats will host the Hillsdale FIGHTING KNIGHTS at 4:00 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average, (San Mateo 2.6, Hillsdale 4) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Hillsdale will be up against a hot San Mateo team: the squad just extended their winning streak to three. San Mateo came out on top against Sacred Heart Prep by a score of 5-1 on Saturday.
Tyce Copus was excellent, scoring a run while going 2-for-4. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in March of 2024.
For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Hillsdale and Mills meet (four straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Friday. Hillsdale came out on top in a nail-biter against Mills, sneaking past 3-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the FIGHTING KNIGHTS have posted against the Vikings since May 5, 2017.
Robert Gilbert tossed a big game, striking out six batters over 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off seven hits (and only one walk). That's the fewest earned runs he has allowed since back in April of 2024.
On the hitting side, Hillsdale saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jonathan Chong, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base.
The win got Hillsdale back to even at 2-2. As for San Mateo, their victory bumped their record up to 4-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. San Mateo has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 12.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Hillsdale struggles in that department as they've been averaging 10 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
San Mateo couldn't quite get it done against Hillsdale in their previous matchup back in March of 2024 as they fell 5-0. Can San Mateo avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
