The Great Oak Wolfpack won against the Vista Murrieta Broncos on Tuesday with 64 points and they decided to stick to that point total again on Friday. Great Oak rang in the new year with a 64-55 victory over Vista Murrieta. Given Great Oak's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 218th, while Vista Murrieta is ranked 577th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Great Oak to victory, but perhaps none more so than Bri Thomas, who scored 19 points along with seven rebounds. Thomas is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Taylor Fuson, who scored 17 points.
When it comes to explaining why Vista Murrieta lost, one person who can't be blamed is Kohen Marshall. Despite the final result, she scored 25 points along with five rebounds and four steals. Marshall scored a full 45.5% of Vista Murrieta's points, the fifth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Nyah Brown, who scored eight points along with nine rebounds.
Great Oak's win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-6. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.5 points per game. As for Vista Murrieta, they have fallen quite a ways from their 21-5 record last season and are now at 5-12.
Great Oak won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Lincoln at 10:00 a.m. on January 6th. Lincoln comes in still looking for their first win of the season. Vista Murrieta won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Aquinas at 1:30 p.m. on January 6th. Hopefully Aquinas focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 20 on Wednesday.
