Everton Browne hit a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime as
St. Benedict's Prep (Newark, N.J.) upset No. 2
Wasatch Academy (Mt. Pleasant, Utah) 61-58 in the Bob Kirk Invitational semifinals.
In a game of runs, the Gray Bees put the pressure on Wasatch Academy early to open an 8-0 advantage, but the second-ranked Tigers battled back and trailed 12-10 after the first period.
The Tigers appeared in control in the second half after bouncing back and opening a 46-37 lead late in the fourth.
The Garden State power, however, never gave up. A late run sparked a buzzer-beating layup from
Ty-Laur Johnson to knot the score at 50 and send the game to extra time.
The overtime session saw each team trade baskets before Browne's heroics.
The Gray Bees were paced by three players scoring in double figures as NJIT signee
Adetokunbo Bakare finished with 16 points,
E.J. Evans chipped in 13 points and
Zaba Bangala scored 10 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.
Richard Isaacs produced 16 points in the loss, while
Mady Sissoko had 11 points to go along with eight rebounds and four blocks in the loss.
St. Benedict's Prep (22-3) advances to tomorrow's title game to face No. 13 La Lumiere (La Porte, Ind.).
Wasatch Academy drops to 24-2, but will likely remain high in the rankings barring a loss in the third-place game to Bishop Walsh (Cumberland, Md.).
