The Wasco Tigers's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their seventh straight loss. They were beaten by Shafter 70-17. While losing is never fun, Wasco can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1285th, while Shafter is ranked 231st).
Wasco's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Camila Almanza, who scored five points.
Shafter found their leader in underclassman Aliyah Escalera, who scored 19 points along with three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Escalera has scored all season. Kyla Schooley was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with seven rebounds and four steals.
Wasco bumped their record down to 3-17 with that defeat, which was their fifth straight at home. As for Shafter, the win (which was their eighth in a row) raised their record to 16-5.
Wasco will be playing at home against McFarland at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Shafter, they will head out on the road to square off against Chavez at 6:15 p.m. on Monday. Chavez is coming into the contest hot, having won their last four games.
