The Bishop Diego Cardinals have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won five contests by 20 points or more this season. They ended the year with a bang, routing Vaughn 49-25. Given Bishop Diego's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 302nd, while Vaughn is ranked 1032nd), the result on Thursday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Bishop Diego found their leader in underclassman Jaymi Coronado, who scored 17 points. That makes it three consecutive games in which Coronado has scored at least 25% of Bishop Diego's points. Jiali Coronado was another key contributor, scoring nine points.
Several White Tigers players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Emma Cisneros, who scored two points along with nine rebounds and four steals. Those nine rebounds set a new season-high mark for her. Another player making a difference was Estefany Contreras , who scored four points along with six rebounds.
Even though they lost, Vaughn were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. This was only their eighth loss (out of nine games) when they hit their own glass that hard.
Bishop Diego's win bumped their record up to 13-2. As for Vaughn, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-11.
Bishop Diego's road trip will continue as they head out to face Avalon at 6:00 p.m. on December 28, 2023. Avalon has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
