After flying high against the Mooreville Troopers on Tuesday, the South Pontotoc Cougars came back down to earth. South Pontotoc suffered a tough 54-29 loss at the hands of Lafayette on Thursday. South Pontotoc was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Lafayette apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in November of 2022.
It was another big night for Madison Smith, who scored 27 points along with 5 rebounds and 3 steals for Lafayette. The matchup was Smith's third in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Harmony Jackson, who scored 9 points along with 9 rebounds.
South Pontotoc's loss dropped their record down to 7-2. As for Lafayette, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 4-2.
South Pontotoc will be playing in front of their home fans against Itawamba Agricultural at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Mississippi (Itawamba Agricultural is ranked 40th, while South Pontotoc is ranked 39th). As for Lafayette, they will face off against Choctaw Central at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
