The West Las Vegas Dons will be home for the holidays to greet the Espanola Valley Sundevils at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (West Las Vegas has six straight victories, Espanola Valley has four straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Last Thursday, West Las Vegas earned a 57-49 win over Moriarty. Given West Las Vegas' advantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked ninth, while Moriarty is ranked 87th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
West Las Vegas can attribute much of their success to Jonathon Gonzales, who scored 19 points along with five rebounds, and Lucas Archuleta, who scored 17 points along with six steals. That's the first time this season that Archuleta scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was P.j. Montano, who scored 12 points.
Meanwhile, Espanola Valley pushed their score all the way to 58 on Tuesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell just short of Valencia by a score of 61-58.
West Las Vegas' win was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 6-0. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 66.2 points per game. As for Espanola Valley, their loss dropped their record down to 2-6.
West Las Vegas came up short against Espanola Valley in their previous meeting back in December of 2016, falling 60-55. Will West Las Vegas have more luck at home instead of on the road? Come back here after the game to get analysis of the match and other basketball content.
