High school softball rankings: ASU-bound Kylee Magee leads Canyon into this week's MaxPreps Top 25

A pair of top 5 California teams fell for the first time at the Michelle Carew Classic in Southern California. It caused a shakeup in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 high school softball rankings.

Kylee Magee of Canyon (Anaheim, Calif.) shined all weekend for the Comanches as the ASU-bound pitcher struck out 14 in a 3-2 win over previous No. 2 Saint Francis (Mountain View, Calif.). She then went on to strike out 17 in a 2-1 championship win over Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.). Canyon lands at No. 10 in the week's rankings.

Top-ranked Roncalli (Indianapolis) is scheduled to get its season going this week. We did not move them from the preseason top spot even though Lake Creek (Montgomery, Texas) has proven they belong. The Lions are rolling and have moved to No. 2 after outscoring their opponents 186-25 so far this season.

Results and games played are key factors for determining the MaxPreps Top 25 softball rankings and movement throughout the season. No team who has yet to play a game will move down or up from their preseason ranking until they hit the dirt.

Teams that do not enter results and statistical information to MaxPreps make forming the rankings and highlighting players much more difficult.

2. Lake Creek (Montgomery, Texas)
Ava Brown struck out 17 as the Lady Lions improved to 23-0 after a 13-2 win over New Caney on Friday.

3. Clovis North (Fresno, Calif.)
Record: 10-0 | Last week: 5
The Broncos have allowed two runs in 10 games played.

4. Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, Calif.)
Record: 16-0 | Last week: 6
Sophomore Rylee McCoy had a pair of hits and RBI during the Lions 5-1 win over Westlake on Thursday.

5 . Deer Park (Texas)
Record: 26-2 | Last week: 8
Reanna Nieman did not allow a hit as the Lady Deer rolled Sam Rayburn 15-0.

6. Patterson Mill (Bel Air, Md.)
Record: 4-0 | Last week: 13
Madison Knight struck out 11, pitched eight innings and hit a walk-off home run to beat Rising Sun 2-0 on Monday.

7. Bullard (Texas)
Record: 25-0 | Last week: 9
Addison Hooker hit a home run and had two triples as the Panthers beat Spring Hill 17-4 on Friday.

8. Oxbridge Academy (West Palm Beach, Fla.)
Record: 12-0-1 | Last week: NR
Western Kentucky commit Luna Curran struck out 14 and allowed one hit as the ThunderWolves beat previously 11th-ranked Wellington 3-0 on Wednesday.

9. Marist (Chicago)
Record: 3-0-1 | Last week: 9
Brooke McNichols stuck out 19 in nine innings as the RedHawks tied Lincoln-Way Central 5-5 on Monday.

10. Canyon (Anaheim, Calif.)

The Comanches made an incredible run to win the Michelle Carew Classic last week. Annabella Fraser had a big double in the championship game that led to the game-winning run.

11. Saint Francis (Mountain View, Calif.)

The Lancers bounced back from its first loss to take third at the Michelle Carew Classic. Big game looms this week against Archbishop Mitty.

12. O'Connor (Helotes, Texas)

The Panthers have won 13 straight games and haven't allowed more than one run since late February.

13. Bartow (Fla.)
Record: 16-1 | Last week: 14
Yellow Jackets did not allow a run at the Roger Jones Kissimmee Klassic over the weekend.

14. Pineville (La.)
Record: 27-1 | Last week: 16
Emily Collins pitched a seven inning shutout as the Rebels beat Alexandria 5-0. The Trojans beat Pineville earlier this season.

15. Benton (Ark.)
Record: 7-0 | Last week: 15
The Panthers return to action this week.

The Spartans lost their first two games of the season at the Michelle Carew Classic. Arizona-bound pitcher Sydney Somnerdike sprained her ankle in a 1-0 victory over Beaumont. Early reports from the OC Register says she will be out for two weeks.

17. Hewitt-Trussville (Trussville, Ala.)

Sophomore Olivia Faggard had three hits during the Huskies 3-0 win over Smiths Station on Saturday.

18. Lakewood Ranch (Bradenton, Fla.)

Kelsey Vogel had four hits in a 4-3 win over No. 28 Parish Community on Tuesday. The two meet again this week.

19. Bend (Ore.)

Sophomore Addisen Fisher continues her dominance in the circle. She struck out 14 in five innings and pitched a no-hitter on Saturday.

20. Beaver (Pa.)

Virginia Tech commit Payton List struck out 16 as the Bobcats kicked off its season with a 3-1 win over Central Valley.

21. North Augusta (S.C.)

Nevaeh Ross and Reilly Howell hit home runs as the Yellowjackets beat No. 23 Lexington 8-7.

22. Riverton (Utah)

Sophomore Lilly Heitz hit a home run and drove in three as the Silverwolves beat Bingham 12-4 on Thursday.

23. Lexington (S.C.)

The Wildcats lost their first game of the season to No. 21 North Augusta. The two have split a pair of games this season.
