Encinal (Alameda) has been home to a number of great high school baseball players over the years. Osiris Johnson joined that list in 2018.
The MaxPreps California Medium Schools Player of the Year, Johnson was named the Player of the Year in the Bay Area by the San Francisco Chronicle and he was taken by the Marlins in the second round of the Major League Baseball draft. The shortstop batted .535 on the year with 24 RBIs.
He joins a prestigious list of great players at Encinal that includes Hall of Famer Willie Stargell and All-Stars Jimmy Rollins and Dontrell Willis.
The medium schools state Coach of the Year winner also comes from Alameda in Hornet coach Ken Americh. Leading Alameda to a Division 2 North Coast Section championship was only half of the story for Americh, who had both of his parents pass away during the season and also suffered a car accident during the season, according to Nate Smith of Prep2Prep. Despite the tragedy, Americh led Alameda to a 27-2-1 record and a No. 17 ranking in the state of California by the MaxPreps computer rankings.
Medium school All-State players were chosen from the following section enrollment divisions: Southern Section Division 3, Division 4 and Division 5, San Diego Section Division 2 and 3, Los Angeles City Section Division 2, Central Section Division 2 and 3, Central Coast Section Division 2, North Coast Section Division 2 and 3, Sac-Joaquin Section Division 2 and 3, Northern Section Division 2, Oakland Section, San Francisco Section.
