After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Pittston, Wyoming Valley West was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They secured a 31-25 W over the Hazleton Area Cougars. The Spartans' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.
Wyoming Valley West was led to victory by Malique Campbell and John Richards. Campbell rushed for 92 yards and one score on only 11 carries, while Richards picked up 65 receiving yards and one TD.all of that, receiving production came thanks to one massive catch Chase Meyers got in on the action as well, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Special teams also deserves some recognition, posting 12 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Campbell, who ran a punt back for a touchdown. Another bright spot was a kickoff return touchdown from him.
Wyoming Valley West didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Meyers and Preston Sninsky. Wyoming Valley West got some further help from Izrel Davis: he made 15 total tackles.
Wyoming Valley West's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-4. As for Hazleton Area, they dropped their record down to 1-4 with the loss, which was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season.
