Lyons hasn't had much luck against Downers Grove North recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Lions will look to defend their home field against the Trojans at 4:30 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Lyons 2.2, Downers Grove North 3.7) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Lyons blew Hinsdale Central out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Monday Hinsdale Central got their revenge. The Lions fell just short of the Red Devils by a score of 8-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Lions have suffered since April 6th.
Lyons got a good showing from Owen Cypress, who struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits (and not a single walk). Cypress has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Justin Heydorn and Lon Roberts did some serious damage despite the final result: Heydorn went 2-for-3 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI, while Roberts went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one double. Another player making a difference was Brady Koren, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Downers Grove North came up short against Willowbrook on Saturday and fell 10-6. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Trojans, who until this matchup were averaging 3.71 runs allowed.
Downers Grove North also got a good showing from Colin Doyle, who tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Those zero hits allowed gave Doyle a new career-low.
On the hitting side, Downers Grove North saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Oliver Gibson, who went 1-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Rhys Dominow was another, going 1-for-3 with one triple.
Downers Grove North's defeat dropped their record down to 18-10. As for Lyons, their loss dropped their record down to 19-6.
Wednesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Lyons hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .326. However, it's not like Downers Grove North struggles in that department as they've averaged .348. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
