Basketball Recap: Mesa Verde Takes a Loss

If Mesa Verde was feeling good fresh off their 46-20 takedown of Futures on Wednesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Mesa Verde Mavericks took a 38-31 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Western Sierra Collegiate Academy Wolves on Thursday. The Mavericks were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Wolves earlier this season, when they won 30-19.

Despite the loss, Mesa Verde saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Jaiden Alexander dropped a double-double on 17 points and 14 boards. Alexander is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down nine or more in the last 23 games she's played dating back to last season. The team also got some help courtesy of Lillianna Stack, who posted seven points.

Mesa Verde's defeat dropped their record down to 6-3. As for Western Sierra Collegiate Academy, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-2.

Mesa Verde and Yuba City will face off at 3:30 p.m. on Friday without much rest having both just played. Western Sierra Collegiate Academy will take on Highlands in a holiday battle at 6:00 p.m. on Monday at. Western Sierra Collegiate Academy's defense has only allowed 26.2 points per game this season, so Highlands' offense will have their work cut out for them.
