Baseball Recap: Mt. Shasta Triumphs

Mt. Shasta hadn't done well against Etna recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Bears narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Lions 9-7. This was a revenge game for the Bears: when they faced off against the Lions on Friday, they had to take a 3-0 defeat.

BEN KENNEDY and SETH SMITH were major factors no matter where they played. On the mound, KENNEDY pitched 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, SMITH didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. KENNEDY has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. At bat, KENNEDY went 2-for-4 with two runs, while SMITH went 2-for-4 with one home run and four RBI. KENNEDY is becoming a predictor of Mt. Shasta's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 7-10 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, Mt. Shasta let Hank Johnson and Nick Mangrum run wild. Johnson went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run, while Mangrum went 1-for-3 with one home run. JAXSON HEDLUND was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs.

Mt. Shasta kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in five consecutive matchups.

Mt. Shasta's record is now 13-10. As for Etna, their loss was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 5-1 and their overall record down to 8-9.

Coming up, Mt. Shasta will be playing at home against Fall River at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Etna, they will venture away from home to face off against Hidden Valley at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Mustangs will roll in looking for their sixth straight victory, something the Lions surely won't give up without a fight.
