Basketball Recap: Jay Comes Up Short

Jay dropped down to 8-9 on Friday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins. They took a blow against the Taft Raiders, falling 71-35. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 635th, while the Raiders are ranked 303rd).

Jay's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Mikayla Garcia, who posted ten points, and Emmarie Baldwin, who put up seven points. Garcia is also on a roll when it comes to shooting accuracy, as she's posted one of at least 56% in the last four games she's played.

As for Taft, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 14-5. They have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won ten contests by 23 points or more this season.

Taft's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kaelyn Flemons led the charge by shooting 74% from the field en route to 32 points and eight rebounds. With that strong performance, Flemons is now averaging an impressive 15.8 points per game. Taylor Olson was another key player, going 6-for-15 to rack up 18 points along with six assists and five boards.

Jay wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 63-47 victory against Harlandale on the 5th. As for Taft, they have also already played their next matchup, a 51-33 win against Manor New Tech on the 5th.
