Cibola is 0-9 against Cleveland since October of 2015 but things could change on Friday. The Cougars will venture away from home to take on the Storm at 7:00 p.m. Cibola is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 26.8 points per game this season.
Cibola is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of New Mexico's top teams: Rio Rancho, who was ranked eighth at the time (Cibola was ranked 13th). The Cougars took a 25-15 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Rams on Friday. The contest was a 3-3 toss-up at halftime, but the Cougars couldn't quite close it out.
Although Cibola took the loss, they still got scores from Hayes Baum and Mack Cash.
Meanwhile, everything came up roses for Cleveland against Farmington on Friday as the squad secured a 49-3 victory. Considering the Storm have won four matchups by more than 24 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Cibola better keep an eye on Jordan Hatch. He was instrumental in Cleveland's win, throwing for 235 yards and four touchdowns while completing 88.9% of his passes. Their leading receiver Darius Steverson was Hatch's top target yet again, picking up 57 receiving yards and a pair of TDs.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Cleveland proved: they limited Farmington to a paltry 2.9 yards per carry. While two picked up at least four total tackles, Troy Logan stood above the rest. He picked up a sack and made four total tackles. Cleveland didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 9.1.
Special teams was a major factor in the game for Cleveland, racking up 13 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Karson Weddle, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
The win made it two in a row for Cleveland and bumps their season record up to 5-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 20 points in those games. As for Cibola, their loss dropped their record down to 4-2.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Cibola has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 187.2 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Cleveland struggles in that department as they've been averaging 148.5 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Cibola took a serious blow against Cleveland in their previous meeting back in October of 2024, falling 55-0. Can the Cougars avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
