The Gibbon Buffaloes have not had quite the year their fans were hoping for to this point, but back-to-back wins may be a sign of good things to come. They slipped by Hi-Line [Eustis-Farnam/Elwood] 25-24 on Thursday.
Leading Gibbon to victory were Carla Murillo-Corona and Brooke Sell. Murillo-Corona scored eight points along with nine rebounds and three blocks, while Sell scored 11 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. That makes it five consecutive games in which Murillo-Corona has scored at least 25% of Gibbon's points.
Hi-Line [Eustis-Farnam/Elwood]'s loss came despite strong showings from Bentley Stubbs and Shelby Jurjens. Stubbs scored six points along with seven steals and six rebounds, while Jurjens scored two points along with 13 rebounds. That's the first time this season that Jurjens pulled down eight or more rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Malia Viter, who scored two points along with six rebounds and four steals.
Even though they lost, Hi-Line [Eustis-Farnam/Elwood] were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Gibbon's win ended a ten-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 2-6. As for Hi-Line [Eustis-Farnam/Elwood], this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-7.
Gibbon and Elm Creek will round out the year against one another at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at. Hopefully Elm Creek focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 on Tuesday. Hi-Line [Eustis-Farnam/Elwood] will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Maywood/Hayes Center on January 2, 2024.
