Baseball Recap: Independence Has No Trouble Against Mallard Creek

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Independence). Everything went their way against the Mallard Creek Mavericks on Friday as the Independence Patriots made off with a 12-2 win. With that victory, the Patriots brought their scoring average up to 7.5 runs per game.

Zachary Benton tossed a big game, pitching five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits.

At the plate, Don Thomas was incredible, scoring two runs while going 3-for-3. He also put up two doubles, which were his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Anthony Mosher, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

Independence always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .545. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive matches.

The win got Independence back to even at 2-2. As for Mallard Creek, they are on a five-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-4.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Independence will face off against Charlotte Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Independence will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each contest than the last. As for Mallard Creek, they will take on West Charlotte at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Mallard Creek has given up an average of 14 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
